What is a landing page?
A landing page acquires valuable user information in exchange for an offer or discount. You obtain this information to nurture these leads later.
It is a simple give and take scene. You offer something to your users, good enough to convince them to share some of their information with you. Now that’s pretty straightforward.
What is a funnel?
A funnel is a chain of steps that a customer takes starting from visiting your website to finally taking the action that you want them to take. The action can be anything from making a purchase to filling out a subscription form or a simple sign up. When they take the action that you intend them to take that is known as conversion.
The main agenda of a funnel is to help you to optimise your marketing efforts based on in which stage of funnel your user is in.
There can be different types of funnel with different goals such as:
- Funnel to sell a product
- Funnel to nurture the leads
- Funnel to upsell
- Funnel for membership
Let’s take an example to understand the funnels a bit more clearly:
You want to sell your ebook online. Following will be the steps on your funnel
- The visitor comes to your website
- He looks up the ebooks available [prospect]
- He signs up to read the sample chapters [lead magnet]
- He finally makes a payment to buy the complete book [conversion]
Now, when you can keep track of all these steps, then you will know where you are gaining customers and at what points you are losing your customers. As in the above example, the free sample acts as your lead magnet.
Some people will sign up and go through the sample. You know that not all of these people will make a purchase but the probability of them becoming a buyer is more than others.
So, you can nurture these leads through automation and convert them into buyers.
Also, you will be able to target your customers in a more focused way rather than spamming them with unwanted marketing emails.
According to a survey from Wishpond last year;
Average conversion rate of a B2B landing page is around 13.28 percent & 9.87% of B2C landing pages Click To Tweet
Read a detailed post on Wishpond review, which I wrote few weeks back.
If you are wondering what is the key to getting the more landing page conversion, it is to keep testing various versions.
When I say about testing various landing page versions, it also means that you will need to design those many landing pages until you get the result you are looking for. Now building a landing page from scratch is time taking and exhausting too. Here’s where all these awesome landing page building tools will come handy for you.
Had there been just one player in the market it would have been an easy choice. But landing page building tools are many, and all are good in one way or the other. You can use Leadpages, ClickFunnels, Unbounce or Instapage. I have been lately using ClickFunnels, and I daresay, it’s great. Previously I used Leadpages, Instapage, and Unbounce too. You can read my insights, review, and comparisons in the previous blogs:
In this article, I will draw a comparison between Leadpages and ClickFunnels.
Leadpages vs ClickFunnels
Before starting off with how one is different from the other, it is important to state that both of these tools are awesome in their own ways. To be fair, each tool serves a specific purpose. Despite having differences, there are many ways in which both of these tools overlap.
To draw a comparison, it is important to understand what each software does. We will begin with Leadpages.

Role of Leadpages in Your Business
Leadpages can do a lot of things. What it is not is that Leadpages does not function like your email marketing software. Leadpages help you capture leads. However, it has no role to play when it comes to sending regular emails to your lists.
You might ask why should you use Leadpages. The answer is simple: Leadpages has a host of templates that increases the conversion rate and grow your email lists quickly.
So now that we are clear what Leadpages does exactly, here is how Leadpages can help in your business. You can use Leadpages for:
1) Hosting a webinar
At times, webinar software are a bit pricey. Leadpages gives you webinar template where you can embed your live webinar presentation. You can also add a chat box for instant Q/A session and communication. You can easily embed a Google Hangouts broadcast in Leadpages.
2) Opt-in boxes within blogs
You can have a neat pop-up for your visitors to subscribe to your blog. With a clear CTA and relevant content, these opt-in boxes are professional and cool.
3) Landing page opt-in form creation is easy
Designing a highly converting landing page may be a tedious task unless you are using Leadpages. It is easy and fast. There are great templates to choose from.
4) You can send content upgrades automatically
All you need to do is create a LeadBox in Leadpages and upload your freebie. Emails will be automatically sent out to your new subscribers after they opt-in.
5) Collect email subscribers via text messaging
Here is how it is done:
- You send a phrase or word to a specific number.
- The user will now need to respond with their email address.
- Once they do so, they are added to your subscribers’ list.
How this helps:
- Rather than pushing your target audience to your website or URL, you can simply ask them to send their mailing ID.
6) The Sales template is perfect to build a sales landing page
You can customise according to your needs.
7) Viral Thank You Pages in minutes
Once a user subscribes, you can showcase your Thank You page that has valuable information. You can include CTA buttons to help your users spread the word on social media directly from here. Saying Thank You is always great and gives a personal touch too.
To know how Leadpages is effectively helping brands increase their email lists, you can take a look at the Case Studies published on Leadpages Blogs. One of the case studies I found really interesting is that of PowToon (Probably because of what the brand does!).
PowToon empowers you to create animated videos and presentations using their drag and drop software. Companies like Starbucks and Cisco use PowToon for their videos. Founded in 2002, PowToon spreads a simple message:
If you have a message, and you want to make it more engaging, animated, fun, and use your own branding, it’s a really easy way to create engaging content.
While you can read the entire case study on Leadpages’ blog, here is the major highlight-
PowToon ran A/B testing with their landing pages. If one didn’t work, they had another interesting one up their sleeves. Ari Sherbill, PowToon exclaimed:
I don’t know what people are doing without Leadpages. The fact is that you do not need to rely on other people if you learn the core basics. It’s easy enough and affordable enough.
PowToon uses webinars as a mode of customer engagement rather than sign ups or subscriptions. Below is one of PowToon’s webinar registration page for its existing clients:
Incase, this didn’t work they had another page ready to roll out.
PowToon relies on Leadpages for everything- from branding to content. With excellent landing pages and engaging content, PowToon has its focus in the right place.
Leadpages Integration
Leadpages provides a host of integrations to make your job easy. Whether it is analytics or CRM, social media or email marketing – Leadpages allows you to integrate into all the segments. Primarily, the Leadpages’ integrations can be segmented as:

Cons of Leadpages
- Doesn’t have an email marketing service
- Creating funnels is a bit tiresome
- The drag and drop editor can be fussy
- The quality of templates is not at par with other alternatives
ClickFunnels
ClickFunnels is an equally wonderful landing page building tool. It is intuitive and easy, with a lot of great built-in templates.
Clickfunnel’s homepage is a content-rich platform. There’s a lot about this tool, and ClickFunnels makes sure that you know exactly what you will get here.
As the name suggests, ClickFunnels is not just about landing pages. You can also create a sales funnel in your system. It might be somewhat similar to Leadpages regarding landing page designing, but it has features beyond that too.
There are funnel templates that will let you create and organise your entire sales funnel. Hence, it is evident that the landing pages you create using ClickFunnels is not a stand-alone thing. It is, in fact, a part of a sales funnel.

This is not just a comparison but also an overview of all the features of ClickFunnels. It goes something like this:
ClickFunnels nicely categorises its features and functionalities into sections like “actionetics” and “backpacks”; like this:
Lastly, there is a short overview termed as “FEATURES”. I’d say this part is all about the FAQs and technicalities that you will get in ClickFunnels.

To make things more convincing, this is how ClickFunnels display their pricing in details:
Pros of ClickFunnels
- ClickFunnels is easy to use
- It is an all-in-one tool
- The dashboard provides all the information and data at one place
- You can create sales funnels easily

Cons of Clickfunnels
- A bit expensive
- Not feasible for a new business
- Lacks a feature that can integrate your blogging website
Update: Clickfunnels has acquired Voomly, Talkia, Doodly, Toonly, Automatic Script from Bryxen, Inc.
Leadpages vs ClickFunnels
I am sure after going through the details of both the tools; it is evident that ClickFunnels is more powerful.
Leadpages is a tool that has its focus in place: building landing pages. That’s all. There is nothing more than that, and I’d say Leadpages does it well.
ClickFunnels goes beyond landing pages. It is a complete package. The landing page building is a part of the entire “Funnel”. ClickFunnels is a highly advanced version of Leadpages.
In many ways both the tools are similar. Some of the features common to both are:
- Creating landing pages using simple WYSIWYG Editor
- Landing pages are mobile responsive
- Host of themes and templates
- A/B split testing
- Webinar Funnels
- Two step opt-ins
- Instant opt-ins
And now, an overview of all that ClickFunnels has and Leadpages doesn’t:
The very first thing that ClickFunnels has are the Sales Funnels (6 Built-in funnels).
While both the tools have Webinar funnels to promote online events, ClickFunnels offer advanced and automated Webinar Funnels. Also, ClickFunnels provide:
- Smart email sequencing
- Full funnel conversion view, or, Tracking per page conversions
- Change funnel order on the go
- Easy page/funnel replication
- Member metrics
- Drip content
- Lock membership content
- Payment integrations
The most important winning point is, ClickFunnels offers a 14-day free trial. You get to try this awesome tool before you pay.
Now let us do a feature based comparison of both the tools and see which one does better in which category.
Feature based comparison
Pricing
Probably you might feel ClickFunnels is very costly. But with the kind of features and conversions you will get, this price is simply worth it. I would urge everyone not to compare the prices of Leadpages and ClickFunnels because both these tools have different functionalities.
Dashboard
Both the tools have great dashboards, but ClickFunnels’s dashboard wins with its flat icons and robust statistical data. Clickfunnels also offers a lot of features such as lead generation, website creation, user performance metrics and a lot more. But Clickfunnels allows you to manage all your operations from one unified dashboard preventing you from getting lost in the chaos of so many bundled up features.
Drag and Drop Editor
Next, comes the editor. ClickFunnels has a powerful editor that gives more variety. Leadpages, on the contrary, has some limitations when it comes to editing page structure or headlines. Although people say too many options will mess things up, I think ClickFunnels’s customisation option is a clear winner. At times I feel Leadpages keeps introducing newer templates to justify this point!
Lead capturing and nurturing
ClickFunnels enables quick lead capturing and nurturing, while Leadpages is only about capturing leads.
With ClickFunnels you can build sales funnels quickly or choose new funnels from a series of pre-built sales funnel options. You can choose the funnels based on your business type from various categories such as e-commerce, education, webinars and several others.
When you go ahead with creating funnels you get two options one is the cookbook builder and the other one is the classic funnel builder. The first one is all about ready to use funnels while the other one is the DIY builder or better say creating your own custom funnel.
Leadpages also allow you to build sales funnels, but it is tiresome and not that intuitive as compared to ClickFunnels. The one thing that I like about Leadpages is that it offers a leadboxes functionality which enables you to grow your email list without building landing pages. You just need to embed the leadbox code into any website that accepts javascript and HTML and ta-da you are good to go.
Affiliate program
One part that I did not mention till now is the section on Affiliate Program. Both Leadpages and ClickFunnels has this feature. While Leadpages provides commission at a 30% rate, ClickFunnels affiliate provides 40% lifetime recurring affiliate commission.
Template Design
When it comes to pre-built templates and the extent to which you can customize it Clickfunnels certainly has an upper hand. The reason being that Clickfunnels just don’t offer a single landing page design but a series of pages that can be put together to create a sales funnel.
On the other hand, if you need a simple but a clean landing page then Leadpages have you covered. But the customization option with Leadpages is quite limited. You can also create sales marketing funnels in Leadpages but it is not that easy as with Clickfuunels.
Analytics
Clickfunnels integrates with Google Analytics and helps you track the key performance metrics. You can do Facebook retargeting or track conversions or retarget people based on their behavioural data. So all in all if you are all about complex analytical details clickfunnels will serve better.
Leadpages also integrates with Google analytics and get you details like page views, conversions, earnings etc. The analytics page of the Leadpages is crisp and clear and you get to see all the details in one place. If basic metrics is what you tend to focus on then Leadpages will fulfil your purpose.
Split testing A/B
Both ClickFunnels and Leadpages offer the split testing functionality.
With the split testing feature Leadpages allow you to test different page versions and find the one that performs better. But to get split testing with Leadpages, you need to upgrade to their advanced plans.
You get the split testing feature with every ClickFunnels account and all of their plans. You can find all the details of the different versions of your sales funnels and landing pages in one place. It allows you to view the entire funnel stats in the funnel dashboard and see the progress in each step of your funnel.
After going through these details you can improve the poor performing landing pages.
Who should use ClickFunnels?
- If you are an established business looking for a focused marketing solution to increase conversion
- If you need other services such as member metrics, drip content, autoresponders other than just landing pages
- Looking forward to increasing your monetising options
- If you want to create actual sales funnel that you can customise on the go.
Who should use Leadpages?
- A new business looking forward to building up their email lists
- Want an affordable with ease of use landing page builder
- Need a one-step landing page without any other complex requirement.
Conclusion for ClickFunnels vs Leadpages

Our Score | 3.5/5 | 4.5/5 |
Clickfunnels quick round-up
The main reason I would vouch for ClickFunnels is that it is always a relief to have a tool that can do more than one thing. Managing ten tools together is a headache at times. In the entire feature set, ClickFunnels has an upper hand where the template builder is powerful, creating funnels with individual pages is a breeze, the customisation option is more flexible and the analytics is a lot more detailed and thorough.
Apart from the best features it also surpass Leadpages with the payment integrations.
There is no doubt that having a Clickfunnels account can have an impressive impact on the growth of your business. Although it is tough on the pockets but you won’t regret spending a hefty amount for all the features that you get.
Leadpages quick round-up

Nice article. It’s good to know that it integrates with GetResponse. I recently got it for my marketing automation and I was wondering what other software can work with it. Landing pages can definitely make a difference!
Yes Jason; you are right about this 🙂
What can you accomplish by using Lead Pages? The landing page builder tool Lead Pages is the perfect tool available in the market for sales lead generation. If capturing the leads is what you seek then lead pages is perfect for you.
Yes definitely Tracy, you are right about Leadpages and ClickFunnel. I found ClickFunnel to be easy and simple tool for lead capturing.
Both the tools, i.e. LeadPages and ClickFunnels are considered to be excellent in all of their own ways. Honestly, each of the two tools serves its own particular purpose. Although both of them have their own differences, but there are a number if things and features that are common in both and these areas overlap.
Agree Chris 🙂
Promotionally oriented content, concise but with the focus on a single message. Instead of a long copy message, it should emphasize “strong” graphics and shorter copy. The customer should be engaged in simple navigation to the desired directional action. Direct address with a clear statement of what is to be achieved will inspire visitors to look at what value the services or products have. Just my thought.
It should actually be longer, but CONCISE copy. So you’re half-right! 🙂
Expand on feature bullets, don’t simply list the benefits with no explanation of WHY they’re beneficial.
Talk about what ACTUALLY matters in the body, because the rest is fluff. Anything else can go in an FAQ section at the bottom of your sales or lead page. Make your headline mean something to the reader and voila, conversions.
The reason for this is simple: Customers have objections and CLARITY beats BREVITY, being short and uninformed ANY DAY of the week. Don’t believe me? Ask your customers! 😉
Thanks for the brief point Russell 🙂
One of my friends has had great results withLeadPages. He has used it on several of his websites. Most popular blogs use LeadPages. Thrive Leads, a WordPress plugin, is another one that is gaining popularity, as a substitute for LeadPages.
Denise yes, Leadpages is a great tool. Also, Thrivethemes plugin Thrive Leads perform great with WordPress websites.
First – why a landing page, in the first place?
To create a bank of user important information via a give and take scenario of having an offer or discount for them on the landing page.
This user information is used for future purposes, for targeting specific customers for certain campaigns.
Second – the average conversion rates are pretty low ( B2B landing page is around 13.28 percent & 9.87% of B2C landing pages)
Third – there is no clear formula to getting great conversions …just keep testing. It is a simple trial and error.
Leadpages is a simple drag and drop landing page building tool, is simple, takes less time to load and No doesn’t require any coding knowledge required.
Hi Ankit! Good article there. Powtoon seems like a great tool. Is it a part of LeadPages? You say in your article that Powtoon depends to Leadpages to produce results. Just curious and interested to checkout Powtoon.
Peterson, Powtoon is completely independent tool than Leadpages. Do check it out.
So you are basically saying leadpages is an enhancer or a booster for better website performance. At what stage in business should one look at using leadpages?
Arun, you can start using Leadpages from day first of your business, when you are ready with all the marketing materials and post lead capture engagement materials. Also, you should have decided the marketing budget.
Hi Ankit. I really appreciate your eye for research, the way you bring forth some amazing technology for us to learn about. Clickfunnels seems more cost effect vis a vis LeadPages. Any other tools like Clickfunnels?
Prem, there are other alternatives to Clickfunnel available, they are instapages, unbounce, webflow and so on.
Leadpages does its job well..and i am happy to go with it.
Happy to hear about this Charles 🙂
Hi Ankit. I really appreciate your eye for research, the way you bring forth some amazing technology for us to learn about. Clickfunnels seems more cost effect vis a vis LeadPages. Any other tools like Clickfunnels?
Theresa, other tolls are unbounce and instapages, which you can also give a try.
Anik, I’m using clickfunnels for almost a month now, paying $97 (20 funnels). The problem is that by now I only have 2 funnels, and I checked with Leadpages and they have a $37 plan for unlimited pages. I’m just starting our and not getting many clients yet, should I switch to Leadpages? It’s really cheaper, what I’m not sure I will be able to do the same (now my funnels are simple till I get more clients I think)
Thanks
Hello Fabricio, if you are not getting much from the ClickFunnels landing pages; then you can switch the system to lower price plan of Leadpages.
Both LeadPages and ClickFunnels are known to be wonderful tools. I have used both the tools and once do not need to have any coding knowledge for using the LeadPages. On the other hand, ClickFunnels helped me in creating the sales funnel in my system. Both of them have awesome dashboards but I would suggest ClickFunnels as it comes with powerful statistical data along with the flat icons.
Thanks for posting your views Tina.
Both of them are tools for building up the landing pages. I had previously used Instapage and also LeadPages but presently I have been enjoying CLickFunnels. Besides being easy and intuitive, it provides with different templates that are inbuilt. With it, one can also create different funnels according to their own choice. This tool will actually make sales seamless and the billing part can also get covered.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts about Leadpages vs ClickFunnels.
Regards
Ankit, do you coding knowledge to use click funnels?
Nina, no coding knowledge is required to use landing pages from ClickFunnels.
So is it correct that Clickfunnels has the payment integration feature that leadpages does not? So if I want to offer a seminar that requires me to collect via venmo or paypal, Clickfunnels is the way to go?
Yes Nilima, you are right about the payment gateway integration with Clickfunnels. And, this is the leading point compared to Leadpages.
Thanks for the Whole break – down and comparison of both Click funnel and Leadpages. This is very helpful.
Hey Delilah, great to hear that it helped you a lot.
Hi- Thanks for the info- Your chart says Clickfunnels also has CRM ability at the$297 level but I can’t find that on their website? Would I still need Active Campaign if I use Clickfunnels ? Thx
Hey Valerie,
If you are using ActiveCampaign; then you don’t need Clickfunnel. ActiveCampaign alone can solve all your needs.
Hi Ankit,
Just following this thread. So isn’t Active Campaign for email marketing? So you mean that you can do all the same things on Active Campaign as Click Funnels? I am considering using Active Campaign and thought I’d have to get Click Funnels as well. Thanks
Janet, ActiveCampaign is more into marketing automation and ClickFunnels has major focus on landing page conversion optimization.
Dude you crushed it with this post. So much information all in one place. Thank you. You saved me hours of research. Your blessed.
Welcome Kevin!
So much of information in one blog is simply commendable. Thank you so much. I would like to ask that what will be the specific scenarios where leadpages is better than clickfunnels and vice versa. Being new to this field I will be really happy with some practical examples of both.
Thanks for the appreciation Jose.
I like Clickfunnels more than leadpages for it offers a few essential features that I need. Apart from that they quickly blend in with my other marketing funnels without any fuss. In case of any problem in building your funnels, there is a big community around it that can help you with it. But, if you are a newbie with clickfunnels and you want to work with advanced funnels, then it is not an easy thing to do. You need quite some time and understanding to be able to make advanced funnels.
Thanks for the comment Martin.
Did you try any other landing page builder tools than Clickfunnels?
We often tend to ignore the relevance of landing pages but the truth is that it is one of the most important factors that lead to customer retention and also higher conversions. If I have to make a pick then I always go with clickfunnels as it does a lot more than just building landing pages.
Nice one, I did similar comparison on my blog, but I was comparing GetResponse with ClickFunnels. I’ll have to also check on LeadPages. Thanks.
thanks for very details and full of information Article
Clickfunnels has offered me a better output as compared to Leadpages. The best things about clickfunnels is that the ease with which once can create sales funnels. If you want something extra with your apart from landing pages then clickfunnels will be the best pick.
We use leadpages and ActiveCampaign for marketing and automation. How would the additional services of ClickFunnels tie into ActiveCampaign without paying for too much of the same service? That’s what I’m trying to figure out. I like the additional benefits of click funnels but is it too much duplication? Thanks for your thoughts
Hey I love this article thanks. I’m thinking of going with ClickFunnels. Do you know of any free funnel building software?
Thank for good reading Ankit.
I love both ClickFunnels and Leadpages, and I think that both are great tools for converting leads. I personally use both in our business right now. I’ll give the advantage to ClickFunnels, though, because it allows for much more customization and actually feels a lot less buggy (despite LeadPages being around for longer). You can only build pages on Leadpages, but you can build pages and build funnels on ClickFunnels.
Great article, learned a lot!
Thanks, Jorgen
