In my previous posts, I have discussed about Google Analytics and other tools to measure traffic, audience behaviour, setting up goals, events and using segments. However, the situation here is different.
In the Internet Marketing Industry, you need to keep a track of lot of things at a time.
You need to measure a lot of factors which the website has accumulated from the time of its existence. Factors like website traffic, website industry ranking, country popularity, technology used in building the website, website performance, indexed pages in search engines, and, trust and power of the website domain or sub-domain, are essential when are evaluating the virtual property- the website.
Here we are trying to measure all of the above mentioned factors using an external tool without the need of any pre-configured tools on the website. In this case, I have discovered that Bookmark-lets can be of great help. These are saved on your bookmarks bar and give you an easy access when you sit to evaluate a website.
Here are 9 bookmark-lets which can be of great help while evaluating a website. Link to download the bookmark-lets is given at the end of post.
Global Ranking of Website:
I would begin with Alexa Ranking. This tool can be used to retrieve relevant data about a website. The Alexa ranking gives you worldwide ranking, along with the list of countries where the website is popular.
Monthly Traffic of the website:
Next in line is Similarweb, which is one of the well known sources from where you can collect information on monthly traffic as well as information focused solely on the present month’s traffic. Similarweb also gives you details like the amount of time spent on the website, bounce rate, different traffic sources, ranking keywords, social media traffic information, and many more aspects related to the website.
Domain Ownership & Detail Lookup:
Third is Whois Domain Lookup. This tool is quite important. I have used this tool to get information about website owner, date on which the domain was bought, updated and it’s expiry date. At times, you can also get the contact details of the website owner using this tool. If the domain is bought from Godaddy, then to know about the owner, you need to go to Godaddy Whois for the information.
Technology and Tools behind the Website:
After having all the details about Website Reach at my disposal, I now start to find more on the technology on which the website is built. Along with that, I also started to accumulate details on various other technology, marketing and analytics tools the website is using.
Sounds impossible? Well, its true, you can garner all these information very easily using Builtwith website. Builtwith not only gives information related to tools being used, but you can also do a comparative analysis of the popularity of those tools across the web.
How Many Pages are Indexed in Google?
With these information in hand, the next thing that follows up is taking a look at how many pages are indexed by Google. This gives me a clear idea how big the online property is, and how many pages of the website are being indexed. It helps me understand which page shows up on Google’s top rankings, along with the appearance in headings.
Power and Trust of the Domain:
It is also essential to measure the website power and trust factors especially if the online business is more dependent on organic traffic via search engines. In order to get a comprehensive result in terms of numbers, I opt for Moz- Domain Authority and Page Authority.
Measure performance of the website:
Although Builtwith gives you a comprehensive overview of the tools and technology used by the website, when it comes to user experience, the page loading time becomes an important factor.If the page loading time is prolonged, it affects website analysis to a great extend. In such situation, I find Pingdom very useful. Pingdom is the top source I look to when I need to have a quick analysis of the website page loadtime. Measure how people are sharing website content in Social Media:
Till now, I discussed about getting deep insight of website trust and power factors through DA and PA. Now, the question arises- what if the website is getting most of the traffic through social media websites like Facebook, Linkedin, or Twitter?
To have a deeper insight in this, I use Buzzsumo. It gives me a comprehensive list of the website links/pages which has been shared the most on these social networks. Although, this does not give an idea about the internal discussions which happen in form of direct messages and personal messages, but, I get some insight about the social media sharing of the website content.
Looking back the website history:
Having checked all the factors which a website/ domain name has accumulated over time, sometimes, I also look at how the website looked when it was first made or gradually how the evolution happened over time. Wayback archive is a great tool which helps in getting a look at the history of the website- how it looked back then, what all content was available at that time, and such information.
Now it’s time for you to get all these bookmark-lets and use them straight from your browser’s bookmark bar.
Steps to import above Bookmark-lets in Google Chrome:
- Download and extract above .zip file.
- In Google Chrome go to Menu > Bookmarks > Import Bookmarks and Settings.
- From Import bookmarks and settings select “Bookmarks HTML File” from drop down menu.
- Choose File from your system and upload it.
After Bookmark-let import has finished, you will view these Bookmark-lets under “Imported” bookmark menu option as “Website Analysis Bookmarklets”. To make the process easy next time, move the “Website Analysis Bookmarklets” menu on top of Bookmark bar. Finally, to run analysis for any particular website, once over the website, click on the desired bookmark-let.
